Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a poorly-understood disorder in which the intestines become inflamed.  There are two types – Ulcerative Colitis which effects the rectum and colon only, and Crohn’s Disease which can effect any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the lips to the anus but is most often seen in the small intestine.  A ‘short’ version of Ulcerative Colitis that only effects the rectum is called Ulcerative Proctitis.  See Ulcerative Proctitis, Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s Disease.
